Hi, Members of the church need the dates of births/baptisms and marriages for religious purposes or ordnances. Dates of death are not needed for these. The IGI was compiled as part of a religious practice not as a genealogical data base. Early members of the church were encouraged to estimate dates and places, which is why there are so many errors and why everything you find should be checked against original records.
