Deborah Hullo, If it was sufficiently infamous, it might have been written up in "The Times" you might find your local library has the indexes for this....Bob

Check out the PRO site. I had a sucess using it for a murder trial. However when searching I used the guilty partys name- not the victim. Have you sent for her death cert? it may give some info. Helena

Debbie At the time you G grandmother died all murders were investigated by New Scotland Yard. It might be worth writing to thier records office or black museum for info. I think it was the latter part of the 1900's that murders in England were investigated locally. Good luck Pat

Hi, We had a similar mystery. The only way I could think of was to find the death. I searched the fiche at our local LDS centre (unlike 1837online it's free). It took ages but I found it eventually. Then I sent for the cert. Once I had the date I hired a researcher to look in the Collindale library in London. She sent me copies of reports of the murder and the trial for £15 which I thought was very reasonable. Hope this helps, Gwynne

I'd really like some advice on finding more information about my great grandmother's death. My late grandmother suddenly revealed in her twilight years that her mother Eliza Fanny Peckham (married name) was murdered by an escapee from a "lunatic asylum". This could have happened any time between 1910 and 1940ish in the Wandsworth/ East/West Ham area in London. I've searched 1837 online from 1918-1929 (run out of credits now),the British Library online newspaper files, murderresearch website and am wondering where to try next. Would the NBI help? (I'm not sure how recent it is). Where is the best place to go for newspaper archives - I live in Wiltshire and getting to the capital is difficult as I have two toddlers age 2 and 3 and am epileptic? I'd love to solve this family mystery. Any advice would be appreciated.
