thanks everyone the birth was in 1944. when I looked up her name there were only two kathleen's registered during the quarter and the year that I know is definately her birth date. one of them was completely in the wrong area, so it must be the other one (fingers crossed). she never ever talked about her mother and there is no-one that I can ask for names unfortunately, the only name I do have is her fathers. How recent is this birth? If your mothers parents were not married then the birth should be under her mothers maiden name and its possible that the fathers details will be given as well....but you say you have ordered the birth certificate under which name, her fathers surname? then his details will be on the birth certificate also your mothers, mothers maiden name and also details of person who registered the birth. hope this helps. Surname of Child wasn't given on birth certs until recent times. Indexing was done by Surname of Parent -- both of them, if they're both given and they aren't the same. If she's in the index under her father's surname, then her father will be named on the cert when it arrives -- no other way his surname could get into the index

yes I know her date of birth and am fairly convinced that this is the right one, just dont want to get my hopes up. I know she had a younger sister but no idea when she was born. Dark history involved in my mothers family which she wouldn't talk about when she was alive. thanks Elaine

Hi Elaine, It's a bit of gamble isn't it!! On your certificate there is a section for name and surname of father, hopefully it will be there... but if they weren't married you may not get his name entered. However, you should get an address for the person registering the birth. Hope that helps. Sue

Hi Do you know your mothers date of birth? That would be the first one to check and do you know if she had any brothers and sisters if they were born after 1914 it will list the mothers maiden name in the index. Sharon

sounds a stupid question but I've sent off for a birth certificate which I'm hoping will be my mothers. I know rougly the area she was born in but don't know her mother's maiden name. I do know her father's name but realise that it might not be on the certificate. When it comes how will I know if I've got the right one, if the father's name is missing??? Thanks Elaine
