Hi I'm new to this too and have just sent off for what I hope is my mothers birth certificate. As far as I am aware (somebody correct me it not), but as long as you can give the name and approximate birth date you should be able to get a copy, it will just cost you more. I managed to get the Volume and Page no. for the birth certificate plus the district so it will cost me a bit less. I found my mothers on 1837.online and it gave me the details, it also tells you how to order a certificate. Hope this helps Elaine

You should give the names of the parents aswell, in my experience the more information you give, the more likely they are to find the certificate. Lucia

Hi June From GRO it cost £7 But you need Quarter, Volume and Page number, I sent off for a birth certificate and gave the wrong Quarter and the search failed so i lost £3 they refund the rest so it 's better to be right first time of course you can spend more for a wider search but the costs soon mount up over the weeks Best of luck David

You should be careful how much extra info you give! If you think you have found the right one and put that (for example) the father's name should be 'Henry' but it actually says 'Harry' on the certificate they won't send it, when it could easily be the same person. Quite often less is more! Anne

Hi June, If you know her name, date of birth and the place, contact the district register office for the place she was born. Some send out an order form, others take the order over the phone then wait for your cheque to arrive. Some take credit cards too and so are very quick in sending the certificate (I've received a couple the next morning). They are usually very helpful at the local offices they've even checked for the certificate while I'm on the phone, then taken my order. Carole
