Thanks Joan It does seem strange. I am hoping to visit the parish where the 2 eldest were christened and see if there is anything in the parish records that might explain why they moved and changed their name as I am having trouble finding anyone connected to the family. Theres always one family that has to be awkward isn't there! Karen

Karen, by way of a nudge... This is strange isn't it. Sometimes children were brought up by grandparents as their own if their daughter couldn't look after them..but a son's children? Anyway, I think I would give them all double barrel names for the time being. Joan

It has taken me a very long time but at last I have found my Skelcher family with the help of the people on this site. The family moved to Droitwich prior to 1881 and changed the name from Skelcher to Dumbleton for reasons only known at the moment to themselves. How would I enter them on my tree? I know that the name Dumbleton is Georges' mothers maiden name so it is a connected surname but George is originally a Skelcher and 2 of his sons where christened in Kineton as Skelchers but the other children are registered with the GRO and christened in Droitwich as Dumbletons. All the children seem to have reverted back to the Skelcher name when they married as I have the certificates. Any thoughts please as I would like to trace any further rellies and don't want to mislead anyone with the wrong surname. Karen
