Hit a brick wall in 18th century - any tips?

I have come to a stop in my research with an ancestor James Angliss who died in Coventry in 1827 aged 74. I know quite a lot about him; he was a fellmonger, a city warden at one time, a freeman of the city and a master of several apprentices. I know who he married and where. I know also that he was a Non-Conformist. But try as I might I can't find any record of his birth. I am beginning to wonder whether he was not born in Coventry but in Hampshire as there are quite a few Anglisses on IGI in Hampshire pre 1800 and very few in Coventry. Post 1800 the Anglisses are numerous in Coventry and London. I know Coventry was a centre of the wool trade so it's not inconceivable that a fellmonger and currier(he prepared animal skins) would come to Coventry for the work. Any tips gratefully accepted. What records have you looked at? Have you tried the parish records? BT's? Militia/Muster records Where was his 1st child born? His wife? Perhaps Coventry council have records of him if he was a freeman. Sorry if you have tried all these, just trying to help. John |
