Probably did, judging by the awful conditions they lived in! Miracle he lived to 80. Jackie

Yep, mine says Decay of Nature - usually a euphemism for Old Age not seen it before, tho I have a few that say General Decay - sounds like they had dry rot and woodworm! Maz. XX

Thanks Diedre. Maz -is it likely to be general deacy of nature - that's what my son says it is. Remember, the cert is for 1843 and he was 80 (really amazing for then) My hubby, who's blinder than me got the general decay bit!!! Jackie

No problem !! Once you have seen Phthisis written once you don't easily forget it !! I'm not too bad with handwriting, so feel free to email any dodgy certs to me and I'll have a go! Just contact me and I will get back to which will give you my email address. Maz. XX

Your 2nd one is probably 'phthisis' (pronounced ty'sis) which is 'a wasting disease but almost invariably will mean pulmonary tuberculosis'. I get mine from a booklet I picked up at a family history fair, but there IS a website and I'm sure someone else will add it here. Maz. XX Will always look anything up - just ask !!

I have today received 4 death certificates but am unable to read the medical terms for the cause of death on two of them. One I believe (1843) is 'general decay of nature' but the other says 'Ph***** exhaustion'! I beleive I saw on GC recently a thread about a website for medical terms. Does anyone know what it is? Would love to hear from anyone else with strange causes of death. Jackie
