Hello there, where can I search for divorce records as I have just found my father was married before he met my mother. As I had no idea of this I don't have a clue when or where he was married.

I don't know about Divorce records but you could just be lazy and pay to trawl through the marriages on 1837online from the comfort of your PC. Start say when he was 20 and search up to around the time he met your Mum.

You could contact the Court Service ---- Principal Registry of the Family Division, Decree Absolute Searches, Family Proceedings Department, Room 2.03, First Avenue House, 42-49 High Holborn, London WC1V 6NP TEL: 020 7947 7016/7017 They do searches but it costs (when I looked about 3/4 years ago I think it was £20 for a 10 year search - can't remember for sure how much but its probably changed by now). Worth contacting if you can't find the info any other way.

The FRC in Islington have some records - not sure which dates they cover - and also the Nat. Archives at Kew. If you are near enough to either of these, it's well worth the visit. Jan from Gravesend Kent.

the name of his first wife willappear on his 2nd marriage cert I think. In the marital condition box the National Archives at Kew do hold some divorce records but they are subject to the 100 years access rule. it may well be that since divorce became more and more common that they don't even hold the more recent ones due to the sheer volume.
