Whilst searching through various pages on 1837 I eventually found the marriage that I was looking for. But, where it normally says the surname of the other spouse (the marriage happened in 1918) it said "Humphreys or Muxlow". I don't understand! I've ordered the certificate anyway, just using the one spouses details but it just made me wonder why. Anyone got any suggestions? PS I've just checked and she's listed under both surnames on the index.

It means, I think, that Humphreys/Maxlow was previously married.

Hi Rachel. You mentioned an index? Query? am I missing something?

Keith Sorry I'm probably using all the wrong terminology. I looked up marriages and because it's 1918 the surname of the other spouse was listed. It said - "Malkin, Joseph" and where it said surname of other spouse it said "Humphreye or Muxlow". I checked the pages for Muxlow and Selina was listed with the same page & vol no as the entry for Joseph. Then when I checked the page for Humphreys (the spelling mistake is theirs not mine!) Selina is listed there as well, with the same page & vol no. I was just curious why she had 2 entries for the one marriage. I've ordered the cerificate just using Joseph's details so now all will be revealed when it arrives. Rachel.

Rachel Selina would have been born with one of the surnames and married previously giving her the second surname For example: My gran was born a Webb. she then married a Holley and on the index for her 2nd marriage to my grandad, his wife is shown as "Holley or Webb". On her marriage certificate under name is Maud Holley formerly Webb. marital condition says divorced wife of L Holley. Hope that makes sense Zoe

Zoe Thanks, I'll wait for the certificate to see which one her maiden name was! Rachel
