I purchased two lots of 1861 Census data from Archive CD Books. The reproduction is excellent. You can zoom in to 400%. Its copies of the original census pages. There are indexes for the villages but not names. So its a case of trawling through. The more you do it the easier it becomes. I can recommend Archive CD Books. With your first purchase you get the Universal British Directory 1791 free.

Malcolm I have just bought the 1851 census for South Staffs at 16GBP -I could not afford the 150. Fool that I was I expected it to be like the 1881 or 1901 for looking up info it is not. The towns villages are separate but you must look page by page which is a daunting task often 2000 pages for one area. But nevertheless if you need info then you have no alternative. Try looking for offers in the paticular area's and dates you need rather than all of England and Wales (if you do not need it) Good luck

HI,I am thinking of investing in the 5 Census sets for Staffordshire but at £ 150 they are quite expensive. Has anyone used these and if so are they any good? Cheers Malcolm Podmore
