Thanks Sue but I'd got John Smith and his wife ok and trying to work backwards from them always assuming that John Smith is actually the right Smith to start with ! They all seemed to live in Knotting Bedfordshire but working through the IGI others were in Risely and Eaton Socon so I'm not even sure I'm on the right track. Bit of a puzzle but its taken my mind of looking for other rellies and finding a brick wall ! Mary Brooke

I am a victim of Smith as well, Mary! Hunts/Cambs Smiths! William whose fathers name was George Edward! And the wife ... well she was just Jane!! sobbing into my weeties! I must say too Mary that every time I see your name it makes me feel good! It was my Mums maiden name .... spelt with an E as well!!

Hi Mary, I don`t think there is an easy answer to this one as anyone with a Smith in their tree will tell you. It`s a case of try, try and try again I`m afraid, but if you have some dates and areas it is worth asking for help on the boards. I am stuck on my gt. grandfather (George Smith), thought I was clever and sent for his marriage cert. - wrong - it came back with no name for his father - am still stuck on my gt. grandfather!! Good luck !! Frances

Any advice on searching for Smith surname ? So many seem to have the same christian names and its hard to work out exactly which one is the right one. I'm currently stuck on a John Smith b.1771 in Knotting Bedfordshire and can't seem to work out who his father might be. The first names seem to alternate from one generation to the next -in this case it seems to be John and Charles but I know there must be a Edward in there somewhere as that was my Dads name. Any ideas anyone ????? Mary Brooke
