Please can anyone help explain why my husband has 2 birth certificates. He was born in 1955 and his mother was not married at the time so he was a Brown. Then in 1956 his mother married his father and my husband became a Hoadley. But when we ordered his birth certificate under the Brown index reference we got the certificate of Hoadley 1956. Does anyone know why this happens, many thanks Anita

Hi Maybe because of the name change they replaced the Brown details with Hoadley as i would have thought that they would both be under the same reference. My husband changed his name as his parents werent married and he changed his name to his fathers surname in his early twenties when he did he was issued with a birth certifcate with the new surname on it. When i had my twins and youngest boy we wasn't married. We married when they was 6 & 3, we re-registered their birth,( a legal requirment) the registar said we were legitimising their births (her words not mine) I asked what would happen if they ever need a copy of their certs in the future, she said the orginal entry would be crossed out and have a ref to the amended entries. So they can never receive a cert in their old names. I still have their orginal ones as well as the amended ones. So all three of my boys have two different birth certs Shelli
