Maz (the Royal One) in the East End 9256 Report 19 Feb 2004 15:26

I have someone on the 1881 shown as a 'Older Up In Iron Works' !! Its in the East End so there may be a missing H at the beginning. Even so ... what on earth did he do ??!! He was only 24, so no older than anyone else, and if he Held things Up, then what were they ??! Until I can see the original on film, has anyone got any bright ideas please. Thanks. Maz. XX

Seriously now , there is a reference on an american website to the holder men at a gas works .they went up the gas holders to shovel snow off them perhaps take a look cached on google page webpages.ursinus.edu/rrichter/whyworks.htm click on the grey cached bit and it explains. Could be connected, might not , but worth a look in absece of anything else. KIM

Thanks to everyone for your helpful suggestions !!! However, Zoe has put me straight now - she googled 'holder up' and 'ironworks' and found it ... He DID hold somthing up - steel plates - while someone else put rivets in ! He would've been employed at Thames Ironworks - origin of West Ham United - making ships including HMS Warrior etc. Thanks to you all, made me roar with laughter !! Maz. XX

Hi Maz My little book gives..... Holder-on.. Part of a two man team who rivets large steel girders together. the other team members being the 'hammer riveter'..... Could be a slight variation of job name. Anne
