Hello Emma Just to let you know that I am going to order Edmins birth cert. I have tried looking for him in the 1881 and 1901 he is not around, so perhaps Edwin Richard Chanter (Chantler) dropped the Edwin - keep fingers x Thanks for your help and all you others if you read this message - you have given me a few more avenues to go down. happy hunting Linda

They often gave the mothers maiden name as their second name, or it could be grandmothers name or one passed down. Another possibility is he was born before the marriage so had mothers name, we had one were she was Blake looked high and low for her marriage it ended up that her name was Churcher father Blake parents married 2 months after the birth but on the children births her maiden name was Blake. Hello there Maz Yes I was thinking maybe they left the word Deceased out by mistake. No I have not found him in the 1861 as yet. Did you see the message from Emma with regards to this Edwin Richard Chanter b 1860 St Pancras looks a good contestant for Richard perhaps he hated the Edwin bit. Have tried finding Edwin Richard on the 1881 and came up with my Richard Chantler spelt Chanter so perhaps this is the little so and so. Linda

Linda, have you found him in 1861 yet just after the son's birth ?? By the way, just cos it says father's name X on the marriage cert without the word Deceased, does NOT mean he is definitely still alive ! Sorry! Maz. XX

Hello again Emma This is a new one. On Richards marriage cert all it says is Richards, but there again he may have hated the name Edwin and dropped it. I will look into this one. By the way you do not bore me senseless, it's nice to have someone to bang heads with and that goes for the other girls too. Thanks for the new lead Linda

Hello Emma Yes I ordered this cert and he is actually a Richard Chandler not Chantler. We are thinking along the same lines though as Chantler for some reason is transcribed as Chandler. Thanks anyway Emma Linda

My GG Grandfather was Richard Chantler b 1860 Kentish Town. I have been unable to find his birth cert so I went for his marriage 1883 Marylebone. On the cert it states his father is Peter MacGregor Chantler Pianoforte Tuner. I have tried every variant in the book to find this Peter. I have asked lots of great helpers on this site, I have looked at the possibilities standing on my head but nothing is hitting me between the eyes so to speak. The 1881 census is a total confusion no Peter about but Richard's surname is spelt Chanter. Richard has a brother on the 1881 John Alfred, found his birth cert parents John Chantler & Georgiana Hall not Peter screeeeeeeeeeeeam! Help!
