Merchant Seaman records if kept would be in the National Archives at Kew but the bad news is that not all of these records have been kept so it is a lottery as to whether or not you will find your ancestor. However often people in the Merchant service would have taken a master mariner or some engineering apprenticeship and all those records are in the National Archives. You can try PROCAT on www.pro.gov to see what they have but you cannot access the actual documents on line. If they were in foreign ports they would not be counted on the census. Was he married as a wife and children would be on census. Janet

Vikki - start by popping his details - name, date and place of birth, occupation (maybe you have a specific job) on this thread - and someone may be able to find him. Maz. XX

Can anyone help My GGGrandfather was in the Merchant Navy, I cannot find him on the census returns for 1881, 1891 or 1901. I have tried everything to find him. Can anyone suggest where else I could look. Is there anywhere that holds records for the Merchant Navy were those in the merchant Navy included in the census if they were at sea when the census was taken.
