Does Gilngate exist??

Have come across a place called Gilngate, Durham on a census but am wondering if this is a proper place as I can't find it on the net....Could anyone shed some light on this please as my gt grandad was supposed to have been born there!! Many thanks ..Aileen

There's a Gilesgate Moor immediately east of Durham City.

Wow thanks for the quick replies! Gilesgate sounds promising Geoff....I really have no idea about geography in the North of England! Rosemary....my ancestor lived in West Ham but appeared to give his place of birth as 'gilngate' durham although he was probably misheard if Geoff is right Aileen

Aileen There are a number of sites that list villages and the like. If you put "villages" in your search engine you will have your pick! Gerry

Thanks everyone...I think my answer is Gilesgate because apparently the mediaeval name for the place is 'Gillygate' which sounds very much like Gilngate....(I searched for 'villages in Durham' and came up with this info)...all your tips and advice and lookups are very much appreciated Aileenx
