I recently purchased the birth certificate of my ggrandmother and on it, it states that her mother was Harriet Crowther, formerly France. On the 1861 census, Harriet is listed as Naylor Thomas Naylor H M 58 Heckmondwike Hannah Naylor W M 40 " Harriet Naylor D U 15 " Eliza Naylor D U 9 " George H Naylor S U 7 " Ben Naylor S U 4 " On the 1881 census, Harriet is married but her mother is; Hannah Naylor H W 61 Heckmondwike Ben France S M 24 " Hannah M France DiL M 21 " Edith M France GD 1 " I cannot find the marriage for a Hannah France and Thomas Naylor. I think I have found Harriet's birth certificate, but before purchasing it, have you any thoughts on whether Hannah was married to a France, or born a France. I have just spent a fortune on certificates and my wife would kill me if I ordered another so soon. Thanks for any suggestions. Russell

Hi I have just been reading through your message, it took me a few times of reading it to take it all in. I think the birth certificate you have is telling you that Harriet was born with the name France, and judging from the census information you have found that the Thomas Naylor listed was probably the second husband of her mother and that she was probably married first to someone called France who was the father of her children. To find out what Hannah's maiden name was i think you would have to either order Harriets birth certificate or find a marriage for her to this Thomas Naylor. They could actually of not been married at all and just used the surname of the head of the household. I have found this with a few of my relatives that have been married a few times and had children from previous marriages. I think if you have found a birth reference for Harriet at around the right time and area that is probably the right one but you wont find out unless you order it. Hope i havent confused you further. Regards Sharon

Well, as I see it, the Ben Naylor on 1861 is obviously the Ben France on 1881, who happened to marry a Hannah, and the Edith on 1881 is Ben and Hannah's daughter! Hannah Naylor is widowed on the 1881 census, but the question is, is why did Ben change his name? Or did he? Perhaps he was actually a 'France' - his mother's maiden name. What if Hannah and Thomas were married in name only, and when Ben came to marry, he discovered that he was actually a France? Interesting ..............

You seem to have lost a Harriet but gained a Hannah? Have another look at your results - surely the first Hannah Naylor is'nt Hannah France....

Thanks for your replies. Hannah Naylor is the mother of Harriet Crowther (nee France), so when was Hannah a France? I suppose I will have to incur the wrath of Jessica (my beautiful wife)!
