Maybe banns of marriage would say something about his parish.

I am trying to find the birthplace of William Downe who is very probably my gggg grandfather. He died in 1841 after the census but he is recorded as 'born in county' (Devon) so I suppose that is something! I know where he married but his wife is shown in the register as resident. (pre 1837) So did he live nearby or did he move to the village from some way away? I have found several William Downes and ruled some out because they have married the 'wrong' woman. All his children were born pre 1837. Any suggestions on the types of record I could try?
