Maiden name in freebmd/1837/ancestry records?

Just wanted to double check - when looking at records for women in the index sites am I looking under their maiden name or married name? Cheers karen |

Birth certificates in maiden name Marriage certificates in maiden name Death certificates in Married name. Most, but I am not certain that all, on second marriages the certificate indexes would use maiden name and state "formerly" married name on the certificate |

I think Sandi means the last sentence the other way round. I have found marriages generally use the previous married name - formerly the maiden name (as that was earlier). Stan |

On the marriage front , for a woman's second marriage the indexes would use the 1st marriage name as the name on the index. But once you had the certificate it would show father's name which is usually the same as woman's maiden surname but not always. Ie. a widow whose married name is Brown would have that entry on the index, but her maiden name may be Smith and that would show under her father's details. KIM |
