Gail, You may already have done this but you can print off a copy of the actual birth entry from the National archivist site. It holds scanned copies of BMDs at Sea 1854 - 1890. Jill

Gail, The Public Record Office holds has Ship's Logs - if you look at their online catalogue PROCAT and ask for reference ADM 53/9813 and 9814, you'll find the Himalaya! Typically, a Ship's Log tells the 'technical' detail of a voyage - wind speed, distance covered and position. However, you will find ports of call listed (on a daily basis) and other interesting little details. Most of the time, one of my lot seemed to be 'manning the yards' as Queen Vic was passing! The Log is in a beautifully bound book - rather delicate some 150 years on - but you can see it in the reading room and take notes (in pencil of course!). Hope you find what you are seeking! I have a Joseph Sharman Born at sea on Her Majesty's Ship Himalaya in 1869, is there any way I can find out more, like where the ship was coming from or going to?? I have a feeling his father James Sharman was perhaps in the forces as they moved a lot and some of Josephs siblings were born Plymouth Barracks, Guildford Barracks, Aldershot and Ireland.
