Hi all, Does anyone know if the 1901 census for Ireland is anywhere on line? I have 2 families in two different counties but only vague info to go on so I really need to check the census for the appropriate areas! Many thanks, Sinead

There is no 1901 Census for IRELAND. Each county or even each parish has its own 1901 Census so you will need to know what part of Ireland you are looking for to access what you want. I have found a couple on line but I have found most on my Dublin/Cork trips. Try Genuki Ireland: www.genuki.org.uk/big/irl/index.html. If this does not get you into site then try a search engine and just key in Genuki Ireland. THis will start you off. Janet

Hi, Don`t know which area you are looking for but you could try the cmc site, www.cmcrp.net/index They have information on there for 1901 census on http://www.rootsweb.com/~irltip2 It says: Pick census from the menu, then pick 1901/1911 census extractions. Hope it proves useful for you. Good luck! Frances

Sorry Janet, but I have to disagree with you on your point about the census. As far as possible the 1901 Census for Ireland was carried out, as far as possible in exactly the same way as in England and Wales. All records were apparently collated at a central point, presumably Dublin or Belfast. Sinead, if you have any idea where in Ireland you are looking for, a local LDS centre should be able to get the films for you. Also contacting PRONI (Public Records Office for Northern Ireland) may prove useful in your quest. Paul

Paul. Are you mixing up N Ireland with S Ireland? N Ireland is the same as Britain and access through PRONI and Belfast not Dublin. S Ireland is different and most of my searches are in S Ireland through Dublin and up to 2003 have been done by county but maybe there has been a change since last year? Janet

Hi all, many thanks for the suggestions-I will try the sites suggested. As for areas I am looking for Waterford city,in Waterford and County Kerry-Annascaul/Dromvalla and Cahersiveen/Killorglin for two specific surnames-Buckley and Connor respectively. I have so many brick walls with my Irish research! The LDS have no parish records for my areas and they said the only Irish data they had was marriages-no mention was made of census so I will call them and check it out. Once again, many thanks to all, Sinead

Sinead, You are aware that you are into S Ireland with the Waterford and Kerry connections so the N Ireland tips about Proni are not going to be of much use to you. Waterford is an area that you may find some access online and is worth trying The Genuki site I mentioned. It will in any case give you many hints on S Ireland research. Don't give up. I am researching many Irish families and have had a lot of help from various sites with trips to Dublin and a trip to Ireland to include Dublin may be your only way through. Irish family history is much more difficult than English and a first starter is some understanding of their system of baronies, parishes, townlands, Griffiths Evaluation and Tithe Aplotment etc. Many of their records were lost in 1922 and so the 1901 and 1911 census are the only available census. Their 1901 census is not like ours and you usually need an address to access it although if you find any online it may have beeen done alphabetically. Hit and misss but worth while when you find the info you want. Just make sure you are getting CORRECT info. DON'T GIVE UP. Incidentally if you get back to pre 1864 for Kerry at present you will need the Bishop of Kerry's permission to access records in Dublin but that is easy to obtain. I had to write to Kerry Bishop last year to access some pre 1864 records. Janet
