Many thanks for your ideas a very nice lady on the trying to find board found them for me. I am obviously doing something wrong or just blind. But you have both given me some ideas for other searches I need to do. Something that I can pass on though one of the ages was wrong on the census so the 5 years either side is a good idea.

How many years have you looked over on 1837? Try 5 yrs either side of what you think is the year.

Got another idea. could they have been born abroad or on ship. The National Archives at kew hold indexes for british citezens born abroad or on a ship on the census the place of birth may have been the first county they lived in, if they arrived there when they were very young. also check to see if there is any one registered under the surname you are looking for but first name Male, these will be found at the end of the list after all the forenames have been. when looking for these check for a corresponding death entry but a lot of the time male was used because they hadnt come up with a forename by the deadline of registration and neglected to tell the registra when they eventually did.

try rootsweb.freebmd.com or failing that think of some names that sound similar they may have been transcribed wrong when they did the index. or there could be the case that they changed their names for some reason, may be someone here can tell you where to look if thats the case and that they did it formerly and not just on a whim.

Found gt grandfather and possibly gt gt grandfather on 1901 census but cannot find them on the 1837online site for the General Register Office list of births. Any ideas where else to look would be most welcome. Jean
