does anyone have a clue what a sira assistant is? my gt gt grandfather is 13 on 1881 census and that is his occupation, karen |

Keren. . . . The closest sounding one I could find are as follows :- SISSOR or CISSOR A tailor. SIZER [1] A person who applied the size to cloth. [2] A person who sorted objects according to size. [3] A person who worked in a paper mill. what occupation has it for the Father ? he might follow in his foot steps. MIKE. |

Hi Karen Hi Mike From my book Sizar.... In university, same as servitor Servitor... general term for someone who 'serves', ranging from a maid to a public servant. Also a commoner university student who received part of his income from assisting gentleman commoners( A term once given to rich British students. They were also known as fellow commoners) If this doesn't 'fit' at least we've learnt something else ! Anne |
