Bob Thanks for that. I'm going to give it a go now. I'll let you know how it goes - hopefully from my computer. Jeanette

Have a look here http://www(.)conexant(.)com/support/ They have generic drivers that should work and will fit on a floppy You may be HFC or HCF (whatever that means) Don't think you can do any damage, it's a device driver. It will either not be accepted, won't or will work. Bob

Robert Finding the driver was the problem. I have a disk to restore the whole of ME but not sure if you can just use it to reinstall the modem. I daren't try anything after the mess I've made! Jeanette

If system restore hasn't worked(!) Try going to control panel/system/hardware and then Device Manager. This will list the hardware on your computer even if it's disabled. In the list you should see the modem(s) click on the modem and you should see options for uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers. That's the easy bit. Finding the driver can be a problem, it may be a custom driver which is usually on a supplied disk or may be on the windows disc or it may be a generic driver . If you don't have it you may have to do a bit of searching on the manufacturers or other sites. This is on Xp but I think ME will not be much different. Bob

Hi Judy This is the real Jeanette here - down at Mums. I have tried System Restore and it wouldn't work. A friend of mine is quite au fait with computers and told me to go and do some stuff in Driver Devices?! I did exactly as he told me anyway and that didn't work either. Can't contact him at the moment as he's on a train back from London. His other suggestion was to go and buy some software for a new modem. Will have a chat with him when he's back up North. I would like to thank you for the help you have given me and when I'm back online I would like some tips on emptying temporary internet files - If you can trust me to do it without making a complete hash of it! I would also like to thank Sioux and Geoff and everybody else who has kept this message where Mum could find it. And finally I would like to thank my Mum for being my secretary - Thanks Mummy! Jeanette

Jeanette....System restore is worth a try....it should put things right....restore to the closest point in time that you recall the computer working correctly. If it's only a matter of a few days, you shouldn't lose anything....if that is a concern, back up your important files and family tree if you've recently added to them....System restore shouldn't alter files, but I find, personally, that I feel better backing up before I change anything. Hi Jeanette, It's horrible when it all goes pear shaped eh? What Operating system are you using? If it's Windows XP then you can do a system restore. which means restoring the whole computer to a time previous to your updating attempt. This causes everything to revert back to the way it was. Fingers crossed you have XP! If you do it's START / CONTROL PANEL / PERFORMANCE & MAINTAINANCE / (Top left hand side of window) SYSTEM RESTORE choose a time previous to your update and follow on screen instructions Sioux

Jeanette: Have you tried rebooting (restarting) the computer? Also, check to make sure that the modem is connected....wires sometimes come loose....to check this, check the phone wire that is plugged into your computer and check the plug where it's plugging into the phone jack. Unplug it and replug it back in. To see if your modem is still there do this: 1. Click on Start 2. Click on Control Panel 3. Scroll the list and find and click on PHONE and MODEM. A box will pop up with labeled tabs at the top. Click on the tab that says MODEM....this will show the modem you have. Make a note of the information (type of Modem) here in case it's something we'll need. Make sure to that the modem has not been DISABLED. To do that: 1. Click on Start 2. Click on Control Panel 3. Scroll the list to NETWORK CONNECTIONS and click it open. See if it says the modem is DISABLED. If it has been, RIGHT click on the name of your dial up company, which should be showing under DIAL UP and ENABLE it. If the modem had actually been uninstalled, you would have gotten a message saying that uninstall was complete or a wizard that would have required you to have pushed a few things before uninstalling took place. Try the above and see if any of it corrects the problem. Judy

Please Help! I don't know what I've done. I was following Judys instructions today re: Microsoft updates. I was presented with the downloads my computer needed. I decided to go for the Driver update first. It all downloaded fine but towards the end of the installation a little box popped up saying something to the effect of 'is it ok to remove such and such a modem?' I clicked on No. I fear I should have clicked on Yes. Now my computer won't dial up the internet. Is there anything I can do to rectify this.........I am using my Mums computer at the moment and she will look in for your reply for me. Thanks Jeanette
