Thanks, Amanda, I have replied. I've now virtually given up hope of ever knowing the name of my gt gt grandmother on this side of the family. All I have is my gt grandparents' marriage certificate, which shows her father as Thomas. No record of her birth, which is why I was hoping to find her at home with her parents in 1841. Not so much a brick wall as reinforced concrete. Jan.

Thanks everyone. In fairness, Stepping Stones did put a label on saying that some pages were too feint to read, and if I sent it back unopened they would refund my money, but of course they didn't indicate WHICH pages were unreadable, and I hoped that Bexley Heath would be OK. In the description of Bexley it implied that it bordered on the Heath, not that it included it, but I can't find any other reference to it anywhere. I am looking for Sarah Maria Standen (aged about 13) and her parents. Her father was Thomas - I have not yet found her mother's name, and that is the main reason for ordering this census. She was born in Sydenham (Lewisham), but married in Bexley Heath in 1849, so I wanted to look in both areas, and both are illegible. In fact I couldn't find Sydenham either, though it was listed in the Index. So all in all I've wasted the money I could have used to buy certificates. Any help would be very much appreciated. Jan.

Hi Jan, Give us the names that you're looking for and the next time I go to the FRC in London I will have a look for you. Addresses would be good too. Jan from Gravesend, Kent.

Jan, I'm not sure if it will help, but Bexleyheath is now one word not Bexley Heath, I don't know if it was in 1841, but it's a thought. Sue

Jan Feel bad now as I think I added to your thread the other day, that you should order it, sorry. But if it's that bad and you wern't told, then you must be able to send it back. Not much good to you if you can't read anything is it? Lynda

Hi Jan, What a shame, I recently asked a lady with it to look up Stone in Kent, and thats not on it either. Which is a pain for me as well as it's my only hope of finding a lady who died in 1842. Hope you get some use out of it. It's abit like ordering the wrong certificates ( very annoying) Regards Keren

Jan I've got the S&N version. It may be the same quality, however I'll give it the once over tonight and let you know. In my opinion the 1841 is virtually useless without occupations and places of birth etc. Gary

I ordered the 1841 Kent census from Stepping Stones yesterday, it arrived today. It was £30 which I could hardly afford, but I'm so held up with my Bexley Heath family that I had to bite the bullet. Found Bexley, most of the sheets are so feint that you can't even tell whether anything was written on them. Couldn't find Bexley Heath at all. What a bummer. Jan.
