Was it more common to get married in the Husband o

There's probably no one answer to this, and there will be too many exceptions to make it anything more than a starting point when trying to trace something, but have you come across any patterns whereby it was more likely for a couple to marry in the Husband or Wife's parish ? I've found so far in my tree that the couple more often than not settled after marriage in the village where the husband was from but, as I haven't yet got too many marriage certificates (and a lot of my family come from villages in the same Districts) I haven't had opportunity to get more details of the actual wedding. Anybody found one more than the other ?

Simon Whatever it makes it more difficult for us to find them, thats where they would have got married!! Lynda

Most of mine married in the wife's parish and lived/settled in the husband's or to confuse me, moved elsewhere. Have found a lot of widowed father-in-laws with younger siblings living with their married daughter's family. If there was a pattern -how much simpler it would be for us! Wonder what our ggrandchildren will make of today's generation -it will be - they actually got married????!!!! What was that custom? Jackie

Hi Most of mine were married in the wife's parish. Sometimes where her family lived and sometimes where she was working. I only have about 20 marriage certs though, perhaps some others might have different experiences. One exception is my husband's father's family who seemed to have some standing in their home parish and everyone connected to it seems to have been matched and dispatched in/from the parish church irrespective of where their own roots were. Best wishes Ann

maybe itseasier when they don't get married they wouldn't need to change their names. Some of mine didn't seem to bother much, some weren't married and had the same surnames?! KIM

I thought it was the tradition that as the father "gave his daughter away" the marriage took place in the wife's parish eventhough she then frequently moved to the parish where her husband was working. Rosemary(Chelmsford)
