Hi Elizabeth, No I didn't find out any more than is written above. Cousins don't remember, and they are younger than me and live in Sheffield!! I was intrigued because I am trying to find Aunt Sarah and her family, she was the only sister of my father's mother that I can remember meeting. Have got the marriage but not all children yet, just the 1st one. PS. Just had a thought, perhaps SFHS would know. Any one a member? Margaret

Margaret, I'm intrigued, did you find the almshouses you were looking for? Liz

Hi all, No luck at the moment. Had a look at the Google site Jacquie suggested but it didn't help me. I am trying to place Abbeydale Road, it is a long time since I was in Sheffield lol. All I can remember is getting the tram from Heeley and then onto another one in the city centre and going up this hill and the green in front of the single storey cottages. I am interested because she is the only one of my fathers aunts that I remember and am trying to trace her on tree. I will have to ring my cousin to get him to place it for me. He can't remember them at all!! Margaret

There are some almshouses on Abbeydale Road South, Beauchief, Sheffield. They are on the road towards Totley, so this fits in with a previous reply. Also there were trams along Abbeydale Road South at the time of your visits. Hope these are the ones you are looking for. Liz, Sheffield.

I'm sure they were set back off the road to the left (from the bus) and as you say had a green in front of them. The moors were straight ahead, if my memory is correct. Someone out there must live near this area. HELP Jackie

Hi Jackie, Thanks for that, I will give it a go and see if it brings up something that I remember. I am sure that I am not imagining it, even though my cousins don't remember aunt Sarah!! Surely not old age setting in yet!! Margaret

hello Margaret Have been racking my brains as was at College in sheffield in the 60s (for all my sins) and used to go past some alms houses on the bus from the town centre towards Totley. Have just done a google search and see lots of references to alms houses in/near to Sheffield. Give it a go. Good hunting Jackie

Does anyone in Sheffield remember these Alms Houses. I have no idea where they were but remember my father taking me to see his aunt Sarah when I was very small, about 1942 onwards. I remember they were bungalow type buildings round a square of lawn. I am trying to trace aunt Sarah but non of my rellies remembers them. We used to take the tram out of the city centre and I think we went up a 'big hill' and they were on the left hand side of the road. Margaret
