On the 1881 census my Grandfather, William George Britton is actually named as Button. His eldest son, George Thomas(aged 11) is given the birthplace of Orchon, Nottingham. I can find no birth registration either on Freebmd or 1837online for him. I have trawled the registration districts for Derbyshire, Nottingham and Lancashire for Orchon without success. Could Orchon be a mis-spelling, or a mis-pronounciation? Was it unusual to be born in one place and perhaps registered in another district? Hope someone can help. I cannot find George or his brother John Henry on any other census. I am fairly certain they were still living in the 1900's as my mother (b.1904) remembered them visiting - they were her half brothers. Rosemary (Chelmsford) |

Orston perhaps? (about 4 miles east of Bingham, 10 miles south of Newark) |

Thanks Geoff, I'll try that. I have a feeling the only birth I could find for Britton for that date was not Notts. Rosemary(Chelmsford) |
