Ah well Terence, It's the luck of the draw. I found my ancestor's number, station, address, (both in Bucks where he came from and in London) referee for the job, what he received in pension and physical description at Kew in less than two hours, with just his name. I have not found anything on policeorders, as he was a PC for 25 years, did nothing heroic, was never cautioned for his behaviour and quietly retired in 1876!

Try www.policeorders.co.uk They were very helpful in tracing one of my ancestors. Kew was Ok, but the records concerning my ancestors warrant number (obtained from the above) had been lost

Police records are kept at Kew. Have you been to www(.)met(.)police(.)uk/history/index This details the history of the Metropolitan Police Force (Bow Street Runners were predecessors of the Met) from 1829 onwards. Maggie

Look him up in the 1881 census, find out when and where he was born, then look for a record of his birth on FreeBMD or the IGI - all URLs given in the Links section of the Resource Centre on the menu at the left. OR Give all the details you know about him on here - name, approx age, place of birth if known, and someone will probably find something out for you. Jan.
