Rosi, they're getting money from the transcribers now, but they lose out later when we all flock to FreeBMD to get the reference! It's better for 1837online if FreeBMD is covered in * and _.

Thanks Ros - I too can't see the problem with using the 1837 images when the FreeBMD ones are virtually unreadable - apart from it being 5p a time, - and of course you are providing your transcriptions for free. I just have a feeling that I think 1837 have objected to this somewhere- but - can't be true - they are getting the money per view from transcribers that do it that way! Rsoi

I'm not sure if freeBMD have actually paid for their scans, the difference is they are the filmed positive one's originally done by the LDS and are on the whole better than the negative GRO ones, but some of the films they are using have had some of the emulsion worn off. The LDS centre by us now use the GRO fiches and they cost 15p a fiche, but you have to buy the whole year, which is expensive when they were handwritten. I can't see the problem in viewing the 1837online images, although I have not done so myself, who is going to know? Ros

I have just finished transcribing a batch of 1844 Births for FreeBMD which were barely legible - so I followed the advice of some of the peeps on the 'transcribing for BMD' thread, used up a credit or two, and printed the relevant page from 1837 Online - where the scans are much less blurry and indistinct. I seem to remember however that doing this is frowned on by 1837 and FreeBMD as they have both paid lots of money to make their scans, so its probably best not to make a habit of it. To say nothing of the expense of doing so. But the other thing is, that if you find one of your ancestors on FreeBMD, and it is not clear, and the page/volume No is a bracket and underline or even asterisk - because the transcriber has found difficulty reading them - then have a look at the page in 1837 - it may well be much more obvious from their scan. And then you can order the Cert. with more confidence. Rosi
