Hi Christine, I would have thought that your best option of finding the husband of you gt gt grandmother would be to find one of their children and get that certificate, that would tell you her husbands name and then you could find their marriage certificate. Mary

What about Irish ones - what do they contain? Haven't yet got an Irish date of death to check but once I can find location will need to.

Hi Christine, Scottish certificates not only give you the maiden name but also her mothers maiden name. Two for the price on one!! Regards Margaret

Thanks Margaret so if i send for the certificate of my gt gt grandmother will it tell me who her husband was! as thats who im after Christine

Re 1870 Death certficates Maiden name of married woman is not given on English certificates, but is given on Scottish ones Maud

Christine No the maiden name will not be on the death cert. The info you get will be name(married name) age, cause of death, where died and the informant, who may be the husband, but could be anyone, relative or neighbour or doctor. On a married woman it usually says wife or widow of ? To get the maiden name you need to get the marriage or birth cert. Margaret

Does anyone know if a death certificate for 1870 would give the maiden name of the person and what other info would be on it Christine
