Christened twice, same day

Hi Norman, My gt grandfather was christened twice in one day according to the IGI. Once in Brigg Lincolnshire (where he was born) and once in Cornwall, where he has no links at all. You should'nt take everything on the IGI as Gospel because there are a lot of transcription errors. Jane.

Have you checked which one was from a film of an actual Parish Register? Sometimes one entry is an input by an LDS member. If they were short of time they might guess at a location or date, or maybe they had a date from family records but not a location, and chose the place where the person was brought up. I have come across cases which have been entered on the IGI which are entirely guesses by an LDS member, in effect creating a person who never existed, where more time and a wider search of nearby Parishes would have produced the correct person. I've got one christened twice on the same day, both C of E. The churches were only 8 miles apart though I've heard of other cases on mailing lists

Thanks Paul I could perhaps understand a marriage being performed twice but my two places are some 35 miles apart so I think there could only have been one christening on the day although recorded in both places. As you say it may be a transcription error. I just wondered if it was a practise to record a christening in both the parents and the grandparents home towns.

I read about something similar once, but that was to do with a marriage where the couple had married in a catholic and CofE church on the same day (which is, apparrently, perfectly legal), due to the different religions of the couple. Perhaps something similar occurred ? alternatively could it be a transcription error; or possibly an assumption made by someone (i.e. they knew the child was christened that date and made an incorrect assumpton about the location ?)

A possible ancestor shows on the IGI as christened at Kingswinford, Staffs in 1768 on the same date as being christened at Lilleshall, Shrops. The parents name is the same. The family lived at Kingswinford after marrying at Lilleshall. Has anyone else experienced this situation?
