My GGrandad was in the 2nd Battalion of the Rifle Brigade as listed on his 1890 marriage certificate. If he was still in the Rifles when the census was taken would he have been included. I looked on Ancestry when I had a free trial and could not find him. Many thanks Karen

Hello Karen, I think it depends where he was. Why don't you give me his name and details and I'll have a look for you :) just in case there have been more details since you looked. Ann

Thanks Ann William Kendrick Eaton - middle name not always used - born Birmingham/Aston 1859. Was 26 on Marriage cert which is dated Dec 22nd 1890 Wife is Betsy (thats her proper name, not short for Elizabeth) Eaton born 1872 in Birmingham. Betsy's age does tend to change with the weather. Her age on the 1890 marriage certificate was 19. Dartmouth St, Aston is listed as the abode on the marriage cert but I have checked this and there is only their respective parents left. They lived next door to each other. Many thanks Karen

If you know the names of any children, try checking the GRO chaplains returns for military births. (You can find these on www.findmypast.com under Military.) These can be very handy for finding other offspring too...

They were still at 91 Dartmouth St in 1901, living with Betsy's mother. They had 2 children with them - William (age 8) and Eliza (age 5) - both born Birmingham.

Since you have his name, age and regiment, you should be able to get his service records from the National Archives. That would tell you where he was in 1891.

Cheers,
Richard

It is quite possible that Karen no longer looks on here, and may not even still be a member of GR
