Someone found the family for me on Shropshire census 1881 or 1891 (can,t remember without going thru loads of papers) it was under TASCAY, I know it was my TAZEY,s because of the other family members. Also on free bmd I found some family members as TAZLY. I am grateful for all your suggestions, and if anyone else can throw any light on this I will be delighted to hear..Angie

Names often change spellings over time. . . I put "Tazey" into Familysearch with exact spelling off and using "all resources" to throw up spelling variants. . . there are quite a few "Tacey"s and "Tacy"s going back to the 1600s, mostly round Leicester, Nottingham and Lincoln and also "Tassy"s and "Tassie"s in or from Scotland. "Tasey" and "Tazey" could be derived from either of those. As to what it might mean. . . isn't "Tassie" a cup in Scottish dialect?

Go to www.archersoftware.co.uk and you will find details of a CD rom that prints out a distribution map of all surnames from the 1881 census.. different colours for different densities. The map will show which areas supply the origin source for a surname. Great fun and only around £12.00 to buy. Having said that it would appear that there are no Tazey s in the UK in the 1881 census and only 16 Tasey s (mainly Lancs) with one in Northumberland.

I have gone onto traceit and entered Tazey they respond in 24/48 hrs so I am waiting to see what happens, thanks for that Geoff. The earliest Tazey I have found was James Tazey b. 1850 , hARLEY Hill, Salop (he was my gg grandfather, he m arried Mary Jane Young b 1852 in Hexham Northumberland. They had at least 11 children, but keep finding more, but his brother George (my g grandfather) also had 11 or so children, all born roughly the same times, with the same names so it gets very confusing to find which belonged to which father... How do I go about finding if they were migrants? Thanks everyone again for your help

Note that the oldest north-eastern Tazey (the matriarch?) in 1901 was born in the Midlands. Did she become a Tazey before she moved to the NE?

There are a few Taseys, some in the NE in 1901. There are also 230odd Taceys, mostly in the east Midlands.

Books about surname origins usually deal with the middle ages, but in this case, FreeBMD hasn't got a single Tazey before 1891. Looks like the name started with a single family somewhere around Hexham, so it would be a case of finding out where they came from, if they were migrants, or what they were called previously

Can anyone tell me how to find out where a surname originates from? I have tried unsuccessfully to find out the origins of the name TAZEY but to no avail. My ancesters seem to be around Durham/Northumberland/Newcastle, a few in Kent but there are not many of them with this unusual name. Angie
