Thanks for your replies. The field artillary seems to fit. I will try the MOD as I have what I assume is his army number but not his regiment. He was my grandfather so luckily for me, he didn't die during the war. regards Tricia

I have a boer war medal on which is inscribed "Dr. 84th Batt. RFA" which i mistakenly assumed to be doctor, 84th battalion. it actually was Driver. 84th Battery, Royal Field Artillery. Bob

Its Royal Field Artillery. Artillery used to be split into Field Heavy, Anti Aircraft, railway etc. You could try the Commonwealth war Graves Commision site if he died, or mod.org the Ministry of Defense site. from their you can get the relevant record office. you will need as much info as possible, name rank number regiment etc and maybe permission from immediate family if hes dead and his permission if alive. Each regiment has its own Museum and Records and possibly Old Comrades Association. Just means more delving!

OOPs silly me! There is a reference to RFA 1914 - 1918 I belive it stood for Reserve Forces Association or again it could also be regular forces assoc. The army loved their acronyms and abbreviations: RFA (admin abbrev's) request for assistance radio frequency authorisation request for final approval restrictive fire area releived from assignment etc, etc, etc. RFA was used a lot as described in 1914-1918 for reservists. But, I MAY BE WRONG, AGAIN.
