Hi Sylvia, Sorry to butt in but my granddad changed his German surname( his dad was a German subject) to another in the 1890s...would there be a record at kew showing that? Aileen

Hi Janice, At the PRO Kew there are reference books which give a number to look at certificates of people who changed their name. You didn't have to do it officially by Deed Poll, you could apparently call yourself what you wanted!! Sue
