Paul

My GGrandfather was born in illigitimately in Hambledon Workhouse in Surrey in 1897, I have his birth certificate. He didn't live with his mother, she went back to work in London. There is no record of him at all in the 1901 census, when he would have been 4 years old. I have looked on the Workhouse census returns and he doesn't appear to be there. Any ideas? Paul

Hi Paul, How sad!! Could he have been fostered, and his surname listed along with others in the house, rather than his own? Debbie

Could he have been listed in one of the "orphan" schools ?Or taken the name of grandparents or relatives that looked after him
