Hi, One way of finding out is looking for wills of the possible fathers. Did they leave wills and if so who did they leave their worldly goods to? The names of the children may help. At that time it was still common for a son to be named after his grandfather. Gwynne

See Caroline, lots of us have the same problem. It's just like doing the sky in a jig saw puzzle. It has to be done sometime, but you decide when! Don't give up!

I have a theory , the son was told you must marry a woman of the same name as your mother no other will do . My Lewis Judd's mother was Mary his 3 wives were all Mary and his daughter was Mary not only that his grandmother was Mary and her mother was Mary not to mention his uncle marrying a Mary and having a child called Lewis and he having three wives luckily only one called Mary it costs afortune in marriage certificates and I'm getting bored with Mary. No where did I put my pile of Elizabeths?

Try being born Smith ! It's a minefield especially when so many of them were called Charles and all in the same village - trying to work out which one belongs to me is not easy ! Mary Brooke

Is it just me or is this "hobby" just full of brick walls????? I'm tracing a line which is full of people with the same name(s) and getting nowhere fast. Any advice? George William Charles Western b.1912 d.1954 m. Irene R Brandon (grandfather) George William Western b.1852? d.?? m.Edith R Gohm (g-grandfather) George Western b.1852? m.Eleanor Hill (g-g-grandfather) George Western (g-g-g-grandfather) - this name is from marriage cert from g-g gf but when I got g-g-gf birth certificate there is no father name. hence brick wall time again. The marriage cert also says full as age so am really stuck as to which George Western it could be. AAAARRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!
