help with certificates

can anyone tell me how you can get birth death and marriage certificates from the records office ,do you have to provide any sort of proof that you are a relative or do they want specific information from you . i cant believe that anyone can ask for a copy of someones birth certificate thanks Laura

Laura,Anyone can ask for anyones certificate which is why they are so important in researching you family tree. You don't have to provide any proof that you are a relative because it doesn't matter. If you search 1837 website you will be able to get the year,quarter,volume and page details send this to GRO http://www.statistics.gov.uk/nsbase/registration/certificates.asp It will cost £7 which is the cheapest price,but if you can't supply those details it will cost you more.Check the website anyway for all the information and prices etc. The 1837 site will cost you money to view information but the freebdm site is free but is not complete.
