I have photocopies of my ancestors' writing from 1794 -- isn't it wonderful to receive that??? (Marriage certificates from LDS for my ancestors in Shipley, Sussex.) I shall print this thread and look into it. Thank you Ann!!!

I joined some French yahoo message boards and met a French lady who looked up loads of stuff for me. She negotiated with some records centres and sent me copies of stuff on my family back to 1700s. I was so grateful to her. There were even photocopies of my ancestors' signatures .. xx Ann xx

Ann: I was frustrated with another side of the family (brick wall) so it is a relief to start checking out my Sarge side. Perhaps she did mean to say chateau -- she has long since passed away -- too late to find out answers from her now. Didn't even think about the date "changes". Will keep that in mind, if I get anywhere with birthdates. Did you order any records from France?

Perhaps your author meant to say Chateau ... whatever it it, it sounds intriguing. As a by the way, I've got copies of births marriages and deaths during the Revolution(s) and it took me some time to match up the dates and seasons they used with our current calendar. xx Ann xx

Hi John and Ann: Thanks for your replies! I did check out google and saw Chartres mentioned; however this is clearly Chartess or Chartiss. It was handwritten, but it is fairly easy to read. I thought, given the sentence, that he was either fleeing from a building, or a woman! We aren't too sure where the "Sarge" family lived in France, but perhaps the author did mean Chartres. Ann, all that is mentioned is "a very old French family..." John Sarge supposedly fled France during the French Revolution; however, he was born around 1785, so unless he took his time to flee, I don't see how the dates match up. He supposedly arrived in Hull and at some point settled in York. Thank you for your suggestions, I appreciate them. PS Apparently he didn't flee too successfully; two of his children were killed in France and his wife died in Hull (although I don't know when she died). He remarried and that's how we are here.

Hello Chartres is where part of my paternal side of the family came from. Do you have any links with it or was your ancestor just passing through - er - more rapidly than he hoped? Best wishes Ann

Tried looking it up -- can't find it. Has anyone heard of this word? Supposedly an ancestor "...had to fly for his life from a lovely Chartess in France..." Phrase was written in 1932. Thanks, in anticipation of suggestions.
