Adoption records

I began by researching the adoptive family and my tree for them goes back to about 1706. I haven't yet started adding him to my tree and think I will do a completely separate one for him if I ever get far enough. If I do find a link to actual family members will add him in but without the marriage link, if you get my drift! My trouble is I have two -both adopted by one childless couple but different natural parents. One I know is the child of a sister -not a clue about the other. Good luck Jackie

Thanks for that Jackie. As I say, I've only found out in the last couple of hours, so really had no chance to do anything yet. Will have a look on Free BMD to see if his birth is there. Just one thing, how have you recorded this on your tree? Good luck with your searches Pauline

Hello Pauline I've also had the same with my tree. I have learnt that there was no such thing as legal adoption until around 1927. He would have been registered under his birth name -ie the name of his natural mother. Also. baptised under that name. Have you a birth certificate? Very often 'adopted' children were the children, in fact, of close family members eg a sister or a niece, so it may be worth your while researching the family history of the family that adopted him. Also look at the road where he was born and look to see if it was near to the address of the adoptive parents. Good luck. It is so frustrating, I know from experience, and I am still looking for clues! There are lots of wonderful people on these boards who I am sure will help you. Jackie

Hi, I know there have been questions before on this subject, but I didn't think they applied to my tree until tonight. I've just found out that my great grandfather Daniel Joseph Richards (b1865 in St Pancras) was adopted by a Joseph Tripp, and shows as an adoptee on the 1881 census. How do I find his real parents please? Any help much appreciated. Pauline
