Good luck! My mother's surname was Lee ... that's enough of a challenge. Fortunately, being part Welsh, I haven't hit a Jones connection yet. Please let me know how you get on ... xx A xx

Thanks Ann, I will send off for the marriage certificate because I know that I have the right one on the 1901 cesus and that lists his wife and I managed to find out the ref for the marraige. On 1891 census thare is only 1 George E Lawrence listed born in Essex that is the right age but he is living with his grandmother and that could be either of the 2 Georges. I cant imagine what it must be like with names like Smith to research if I am having this much trouble over one name!

Hi Well .... the two birth certs would give you lots of clues that might help you clear up the matter. Marriage certificates might help since they would most likely give the names of fathers if you know who he married. You could try looking up later census data to see whether there are any other family member living with your person. I have found a few in laws and siblings doing this. Someone on this board might have an earlier census. Good luck Ann

Is there any way to find out the parents of someone or where they were living on an earlier census? The problem is while I searched the 1881 for George E Lawrence born in Epping in 1872 it came out with just one family, everything seemed to fit (name, age, birth place), so I did a search on here just in case any of the family turned up and there was a result, so I contacted the person and he sent me some details but they didn't match the ones I had. It turns out that there were 2 George E Lawrences born in the same area at the same time, they even married in the same year! Is it a case of sending off for another birth certificate or is there some other way of finding out details?
