From experienc, Lavinia could have used any name! I have a photo of my g grandmother with her sister, it says 'Amelia and Bella' on the back. Gran told me it was her mother and aunt, so that verified the names. I found an Amelia and a Bella on the 1901, but couldn't find any birth certificates. 1881 census has an Agnes in the family - yes that was Amelia's name. After 3 years I have tracked Bella down - her name was Beatrice Isabella Moral is -don't give up hope, it'll come to you - probably later rather than sooner!

Carol, Here is a possibility ALICE Derbyshire born Marple, Cheshire, which is just down the road from Stockport age 9. Is Alice short for Lavinia? There are definitely no Lavinia's Dar* Der* etc so a mistranscription seems unlikely. Good luck John

Could Lavinia have become 'Lena' ? 1901 census: Name/Age/Where Born/Administrative County/Civil Parish Lena Derbyshire/9/Cheshire Timperley/Chester/Altincham I checked 1837online, just to see if she had another name after Lavinia but that's all. In case you want it her birth registration was in Stockport vol 8a page 105. Good Luck! Hilary

Thanks Maggie and Rosemary. I have tried every way possible and she still doesn't come up. My mother-in-law has her marriage certificate and she hasn't changed her name on that - nothing to say that she hadn't previously though! Never mind, I am sure she'll resurface somewhere along the line. Best wishes Carol

This is tricky. Have you tried just putting in the surname, age 9-11 and the areas she could have been living in on the 1901 census? She may not be using her given forename - I have spent ages looking for ggreat aunt 'Bella', only to find her real name was Beatrice! Then again, if she's not living with her parents she may be using the surname of the people she's living with. How about trying a marriage or death search? good luck Mags

Hello As a last resort, wonder if anyone can find the above for my mother in law. She was born in December 1891 (so missed the 1891 census) to John Derbyshire and Mary Ann (nee Stonier). Siblings were Hannah, Ernest, Emily, Ethel, Jessie and Ada. Have found them on 1891 and 1901. Mary Ann is deceased by 1901 and John is living with a family of Drinkwaters (his in-laws) with Ada. One of the Drinkwaters is a 13 year old Lavinia and I thought for a time this was "our" Lavinia - until I found the birth of a Lavinia Drinkwater!! Ethel and Jessie are living with their aunt and uncle Louis and Mary Peets in 1901. The areas she is most likely to be in are Stockport, Cheshire, Staffordshire, Salford, or Manchester. A fresh pair of eyes might help!!. Thanks and best wishes, Carol.
