Hi, On my GG Grandmothers marriage certificate of 1885 her father is named as Alfred Cornelius Walles profession Labourer. However the IGI and 1881 census seems to show that he died in 1875 and that her mother re-married. He's not a witness on the certificate (bit difficult if he's dead! lol) but should it not say he's deceased? Naomi

Technically it should say deseased, but the registrar could only enter what he was told, and it is possible that this information was not given at the time.

Thanks Carol, I think I'm going to order the death cert for when I think he should have died to confirm it's the right one. Naomi

Naomi, I have a marriage cert and it states brides father as being deceased next to his name and occupation, although whether this was the standard who knows!?!? They seem to do what they like just to confuse us more!?!? zoë

Naomi, I have the opposite problem to you; I have a marriage certificate for my Grandparent which states that the brides father was deceased, but I can't find a death for him ! All I know is he died sometime between 1891 and 1901... still, if it was easy, it wouldn't be fun would it ? Good Luck Paul

I have a similar same problem to you Paul, the marriage cert (1928) says the grooms father was deceased (which I believe he was in 1892) but my grandfather was born in 1908!!!???!!!! Another immaculate birth???

I have the same problem I knoe my G granfather died between 1889-1891 because his wife was a widow on the 1891 census and that they had a child in 1889, but cann't find his death anywhere Margaret

I have a marriage cert which states both parties are aged 21 and both fathers are deceased. As this contradicts everything I've discovered so far ie ages on censuses, no birth or death refs that fit, what are the chances that they were younger and lied to avoid the need for parental consent?

My grandmothers birth certificate states that her father is deceased, but still gives his name and occupation. The only death I can find that matches his name occured in Wilts and she was born is Glos, so I assumed that it was not his death recorded and discounted it. I have just discovered this weekend, that he was, in fact, a soldier and was stationed in Warminster, so I must now order the cert, cause I have changed my mind and now think that it was him all along!

When my grandfather remarried at the age of 72 in 1960, one of the fathers is stated to be deceased but the other is not, whereas I know that they both were, so don't rely on the certificate.
