Crista, yes pretty sure as the two children living with them are Eva (my Grandmother born Ventnor) and Herbert (my Great Uncle also born Ventnor). I wonder if one of the children gave the enumerator the places of birth, or filled in the form. It is them though but I am taking the places of birth as being wrong. Also they are still living in the same house with Albert Millett. Ann Glos

Hi Shelli, got your message thanks. Ann, Are you sure the Reggs couple on the 1901 census is the right one? The ages are slightly off, as are both their places of birth and Henry has gone from being a journeyman butcher to a bricklayers labourer. Thanks Crista, I couldn'r find him. My goodness, his birthplace moves around doesn't it? I found a William Riggs in the 1881 who lived in Christchurch but I don't think he is Williams' Father because he was a coachman and on the marriege certificate william was a woodsman. Anyway I would love to know why Henry and Elizabeth were in the IOW??? And no wonder I couldn't find him he was calling himself Harry (didn't think of that!) Ann

AnninGlos Report 6 Feb 2004 09:45

Crista The 1881 was just before they were married (7 sept 1881). Elizabeth ( Duffin as she then was) is lodging in Ventnor Isle of Wight at what looks like a boarding house. On their marriage certificate Henry gives his residence as 48 South St Ventnor, his Father is William Riggs, Elizabeth gives her address as 1 East St Ventnor. They got married in the Register office Ventnor. (Elizabeth's family still in Botley.) They really are the most elusive of my families, from elizabeth's Grandfathers to Henry they have all given me trouble!! I suppose Henry could have got his Geography muddled and thought when he did the 1891 that Totton was in Dorset, then maybe Elizabeth corrected him in 1901. Who knows? Maybe I need to track him down via the 1861, although not many people have that one so it would have to be a registry office job (but which one?) Ann

Ann, The 1901 census says Henry was born In Hounsdown, West Totton. This is in Hampshire. Can't find him in 1881. Crista

Hi Crista, I have the free pages from the 1901 but not the image. They were under REGGS. I think they were at the same address but only because my cousin told me so, she must have looked at the image. Ann

Crista I must be slipping, I missed that on free BMD, the annoying thing is because I couldn't find them I went onto 1837 and it took nearly all of £5 to find that Emily in 1888. I had already sent for her cert when you found the right one so that was an expensive mistake. never mind, can't be helped now and it may come in useful. I don't recognise the other names with the 1888 one. It said no matches when I put the ref for Emily in. My Gt Grandmother was Elizabeth Duffin (born 1859), she was in Ventnor in the 1881 census, she married Henry Riggs in 1881 and was still married to him in 1907 (my Grandparents' wedding) but was married to Albert by 1922 (myGt Uncles wedding). My second cousin remembers her well (I don't although I have a photo of me with her) and says that when she knew her she would never mention Henry Riggs name for some reason. We have not yet found a death for Henry (or a birth but it wasn't until yesterday that I knew he was born in Dorset, we always thought he was born in the IOW). Henry's father was William Riggs Elizabeth Duffin's father was William Duffin and her mother Ann (Webster from Highgate Middlesex). I have to admit that I somehow have neglected to look up Albert in the 1881. Many thanks for your help it is most useful and the bricks are starting to fall out of this very high wall! Ann Glos

Ann, By the way, there are other potential husbands listed with the 1888 Emily. There's a problem with FreeBMD at the moment so that it doesn't always display them. AnninGlos Report 4 Feb 2004 21:55

Crista That is the one. And that means I have sent for the wrong one!!!! I found Emily Duffin Sept 1888 South Stoneham and quite though it was her. Another £7 wasted. Thanks so much, and, yes she did die but I didn't know when so thanks again you are a star. What did you look it up on? Not 1837? I will now send for the right ones! Cheers Ann

Hi Ann, I found that the pages differ in 1837 depending on the year. Some of the marriage pages have the name of both parties and others only have the name of one. In the case of my great grandfather I had to cross reference the same date with the person who I think he married and she appeared under her maiden name. So I've sent off for the certificate to confirm I'm right. Sioux
