It seems my ancestors changed their surname at some point. What do you make of this? George Greenley married Ann Pashby in 1797 in Folkton/Flixton, Yorks. (from the IGI as marriages from parish records are missing for this time) They have children Christiana, Richard, George, John, Benjamin and Joseph - All christened with the surname Green. Christiana dies in 1802 and is buried with the name Green. All of the remaining siblings get married in various parts of Yorkshire with the surname Greenley and come back to live in Folkton/Flixton and christen all of their children Greenley. That is apart from George who is married as Green in Hutton Cranswick in 1824. Him and his wife have their 1st two children, Ann and John, in Hutton Cranswick and are christened with the surname Green (parish records). They then move back to Folkton/Flixton and have several more children who are christened with the surname Greenley. The original George and Ann have now changed their surname to Greenley. George (the 2nd)'s daughter Ann who was christened Green gets married with the surname Greenley in Folkton/Flixton in 1845 (parish records). There are other Greenley's in Flixton/Folkton but they don't seem to be related to mine. This is driving me nuts! Jeanette

These things happened -- surname evolution in action. Sometimes it could be hard for a family to be sure what its name was. And if a family moved into a parish where a similar name was already established, everybody would get their name wrong -- people didn't think it mattered -- and sometimes they would give up and accept the change I've got Claypons (originally Clephan, Scottish) who moved to a parish where a Clayton family was long settled. 100 years later all their descendants were Claytons Same story with a Haywood who moved into Heward territory Seems likely your George was originally a Green, but in Folkton they couldn't stop people calling them Greenley as if they were related to the other Greenleys

Thanks Robin I thought it was probably something like that. Either that or they quite liked Greenley as it wasn't as common as Green! Of course this means my search on this side will probably grind to a halt now. Without knowing where George came from or what his father was called I can't get any further back. Cheers!
