I saw this programme on satellite telly last week. It was on Channel 4 previously. It was quite interesting(!) showing how graveyards were cleared and re-interred at another site e.g when building on the existing graveyard. A church called St Lukes had been derelict for quite a while, it was then bought to be turned into some sort of arts centre. The underground crypt had to be cleared. There were around 1500 caskets to be removed. One, when the coffin fell away showed the almost intact body which had been buried over 150 years. A bit morbid, but very interesting. I didn't know this happened.

hi diane i saw that one, how did they cope with the smell, when one family found a will and the deceased wanted to be cremated instead of buried, so they had him dug up after 6 months and cremated him, i think his ashes then went to poland. marcie x

Was it the one where they lived on site in a camper van for the duration of digging up and there was one girl? If so I saw that a while ago and it was very interesting. Naomi

Yes Naomi, I thought it was fascinating. Just shows you don't know what goes on. They were showing about something called the cemetery train. Next time it is on I will watch all of it. I only say about 40 minutes of it. I wonder how many of these graveyards have been relocated. I've seen notices on tombs etc., saying they will be removed but never heard of whole areas being done. They had a lot of immigrants doing the work because they said it was easier as they still were having all the appropriate jabs in the countries they came from. English workers would have had to go through all the injections etc., before they could start.
