Robin: my ancestor is Henry (b 1840) who lied about his age, incidentally. His wife was more than 10 years younger than he was, so his age changed, depending on which document you look at. I wonder if his father was John (b 1822), rather than John (born c 1785)??? (Seeing John 1822 made some lightbulbs go off, thank you!)

IGI's got a John 1822 Manchester, Fanney 1830 York, and in between, a Robert 1825 Doncaster (legitimate). The plot thickens!

John supposedly was born in France and left in haste. His wife and children were supposedly killed on the trip to England. According to my relative's research (I've not investigated this side of the family yet) John was born around 1785!!! I've never been in touch with the researcher -- I obviously should track him down. Hopefully, he kept good notes! Good point about the grandparent idea. Given the dates, that would make sense. Perhaps "Stan" has a copy of the parish record. Thank you both Kim and Angela. I'm frustrated with another side of the family -- good time to switch to this side of the family! :~)

Is there any chance that he belongs to another member of the family? I found a girl on my tree who was being brought up by what were clearly by their ages her grandparents though it didn't say so.

may be she was having an affair and the husband was away or something and came back to find another child that wasn't his.... Is he illegitimate according to the Parish record? KIM

A relative has been researching our Sarge line. He thinks John Sarge married Mary Thomas and had John (b 1822), Fannie (b 1830), Robert (b 1833) and Henry (b 1840). Robert is listed as illegitimate. Any guesses as to why the third child would be illegitimate; perhaps Mary's husband didn't have anything to do with his conception??.................Also, seems to be a big gap between births, especially since this was supposed to have been his second marriage (first wife and children were supposedly killed).
