Karen, It is a popular misconception that the IGI is complete and infallible. It is even possible that they have not yet transcribed the Ewhurst records. The place you need to go next is the Parish Registers for Ewhurst. You could try the "Genuki" site, for example, I used to love travelling around the coutry in my old Ford Anglia looking at Parish Registers in Churches where some of my Ancestors had been Baptised, Married and Buried. All the best with your research, Jim

Hi Karen, Just seen your message hence the delay in replying. Try your nearest Latter Day Saints records office. They will be able to order the parish record for you which should have the entry you're looking for. Jan from Gravesend, Kent.

Can you find the father on the same census? That would give you his place of birth. Jan

Hi! I seem to have hit a brick wall with my Popes. I confirmed yesterday, from the 1851 census, that my g-g grandfather Sivyer Pope was born in Ewhurst, Sussex (1811). His father, Samuel, was married there the year before, but his birth is not listed on the IGI for that village. I have found a couple of possible Samuel births in nearby Sussex villages, but as this is before the registration was introduced, how can I tell which Samuel is the correct one, if at all? Any advice very gratefully received! Thanks - Karen
