Thank you both, I think it's probably likely that he did work at the hospital - Karen

Hi Karen, Maybe he was part of the maintenance team and had staff quarters there? It is a very big hospital. Regards Margaret

Hello Karen Type History of New Royal Infirmary Edinburgh into search. You will probably find the answer you are looking for. It was opened in 1729 as a charitable institution for the poor. It has a photograph as well. Shirley

Help!! Have found my g-g grandfather, David Mackie, and his family, living at the New Royal Infirmary in 1881, then living in an institution (not sure which one, no info given on the census sheet, but assuming the same Infirmary) in 1891 and 1901. However, I'm not sure why they were living there - David Mackie was a plumber, his status was 'working' on all the census so definitely not sick! Does anybody know if part of the Infirmary was used to house the poor? Thanks in advance for your help, Karen
